Hope & Despair
Hope & Despair is a Danish-German Interreg project (an EU program supporting regional development), where seven museums, focusing on World War II, will collaborate to rethink interpretation and attract national and international visitors. Together, the seven museums and locations can create a greater collective appeal while exploring previously untapped potential in the historical connections across borders.
Three tourism destinations will help disseminate the narratives, while four research institutions will contribute their respective expertise in exhibition and interpretation techniques to ensure contemporary, relevant, and attractive presentation—even during travel between locations.
From Mark, museum curator Rikke Olafson participates in "Hope & Despair." Rikke will, among other things, contribute to developing attractive and engaging school programs for older students together with Danish and German colleagues. Additionally, Rikke is interested in the intriguing dynamics and differences that come with collaborating with German colleagues who have a different connection to and understanding of the history of World War II.
Other partners in Hope & Despair include KZ-Gedenkstätte Neuengamme, Jüdisches Museum, KZ-Gedenkstätte Husum-Schwesing, KZ-Gedenk- und Begegnungsstätte Ladelund, Frøslevlejren, Staldgården Museum Kolding, Trekantområdet, Destination Sønderjylland, Flensburger Förde, UC Syd, Europa-Universität Flensburg, Fachhochschule Kiel, and Designskolen Kolding.
The project is supported by Interreg Deutschland-Danmark.
